Zulu Village

Shaka, King of the Zulus created the only army in history which, in 1879 at the Battle of Isandlwana armed only with spears and knobkerries annihalated a British army who were equipped with the latest firearms.

Our visit to a traditional Zulu village will enable you to experience Zulu culture, rituals, costumes and traditional beliefs as well as their music and dance made famous by Paul Simon and Johhny Clegg.

King Shaka was the illegitimate son of King Senzagakhona and Nandi, daughter of the Langeni chief. Cast out by his father, Shaka and Nandi sought refuge among the Mtetwa people.

During his military training with the Mtetwa army, Shaka developed new tactics and replaced the traditional throwing spear by a short handled, long bladed stabbing spear. King Shaka noticed that when he withdrew his new spear from the stomach of an enemy, it made a very particular sound which, in Zulu tradition, he imitated naming his design of spear 'Iklwa'.

Using his new tactics and weapon, Shaka who became known as the 'Black Napoleon', took back his father's kingdom. His armies or Impis, subjagated other tribes throughout the region. By the time of his death in 1827, Shaka was, in reality, Emperor of southern Africa

This visit will help you understand and appreciate the Zulu and their culture so different from your own.
